Placing Ads

Make sure your site is well developed before applying for ads. Your should only apply once your site is worthy to advertise. Think about it, if your paying to place a billboard up for your business. You don't want to place it in a bad area of town. You don't want to place it on a road no one goes down. The same for people paying for the ads you want to place on your site.

Now with with Adsense its a computer that looks over your site. This computer is called AdSense crawler. When it looks over your site its looking for well developed sites. How does a computer know if my site looks good you ask.

Here are a few of many things look at:
  • HTML errors: A site with error in the HTML is not only a problem for Adsense crawler but many others crawlers as well.
  • Site Content: If you have a lot of blank pages through out your site then it will pick up your site as being plain or to bare. Flash videos and games do not register to crawlers, therefore if you just have videos on your site, then you may want to add text in post with videos. Also know the crawler looks at what ads to display on your pages. If you don't have any text on pages the ads may show up as public ads or blank in which you don't get payed for. This is only a factor if you don't select channels for your ads.
  • Adult Content: Be careful of how many times you use mature words. To many bad words and sexuality phases can cause the crawler to think your site is an adult site. Adsense is not for those type of sites.
  • Links: Also acquiring a good number of links and post with in your site is a good idea. The more the better. Just try not to go over bored with to many links on one page.
  • Navigation: Crawlers need to have access to the links with in your site, meaning if you don't have a good navigation such as Link Link, Archives, Pages , or some form of Hyperlinks leading to your post. Then the crawlers can not find your post and your site is not well formed.
  • Widget Content: You need to have some widget content on your site. If you have a sidebar with nothing in it then your site look bare to the crawler. You might be planing to use that space for ads but you should place something in there before applying for ads. You need to keep the content in there in till you have been approved. Sites with single column templates will have a disadvantage for this reason and will have to make up for it in other areas.
  • Site Age: It is a myth that sites need to be of a certain age to apply for ads. However sites that are older might have Page Rank which is almost a guarantee approval for ads. Also if your site is listed in Google search then your more likely to have your site looked over faster for ads. The reason being is your site is already listed as a site to crawl. The more post the better because its more doors for the crawler to come into your site.
Note: Be careful with robot.txt files. You can block Adsense crawler from your site if you are not careful.

Now after you believe you site is ready to apply for ads then you have a few to choose from.

Here are 2 that I use:
You must be 18 years or older to sign up for ads.

After you have been approved for ads then you can start placing them. You must keep in mind the width of your page layouts before placing ads. You don't want to have ads not fit in the area you placed them in. Also you want to make the best fit possible to keep your site looking professional.

Now with Adsense you can place them through the gadgets by adding a Adsense gadget or you can create a ad by going on the Adsense site. If you choose to create a ad on the site, you can select channel for the ads to go on. For example if your site is about computers and games you may want to add a channel called games or PC. Now once your done designing a ad it will give you a code for this ad. Place this code in a HTML/javascript gadget in the Page Elements. Now with Adsense you can only have a max of 3 ads to a page.

When adding Adbrite its a lot like adding Adsense without the Adsense gadget. You just design your ad and channels, then place the code into a HTML/javascript gadget.

Note: Keep in mind the more flashy gadgets and ads you have on your page, the slower your page will load. Slow loading pages are not only looked down on by Google. But also can crash slower computers and internets. If someone comes to your site for the first time and their computer crashes you can almost bet they wont be back.

Think about channels as a TV channel. If you have a science channel on you will be watching shows about science. If you have the history channel on you will be watching history shows. Basically you want to appeal to your viewers. The best thing you can do is look into your stats and see what pages are being viewed the most or what keywords were used in the search engine to find your blog. Once you know that you can find out what channels to use for your adsense. So input keywords in as channels and the ads will normally use the keywords to try and decide what ads will display on your site.
